Arms of Sydals

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1980.

The arms show a cuckoo and three apples. The apples refer to the former Lysabild municipality, as -abild means apple.

The cuckoo refers to Hans, Duke of Sønderborg, who in 1615 forced the people who owned him money to build farms and dikes in Kegnæs and forced them to settle in the new area. According to legend, Duke Hans often stayed with the farmers (wives) in Kegnæs, like a cuckoo who lays eggs in the nests of other birds...
