Region : Hovedstaden
Abolished 2007
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1942.
The golden worm or dragon has been used as the official symbol for the island since the late 16th century, but the symbol itself most probably dates from medieval times. Its meaning, however, is not known. It is said that it may be derived from a local legend. It is also possible that the dragon is derived from the griffin of Pommern and Rostock.
