The silver cross in blue is a Christian symbol as well as the cross of the Québec flag. On the cross there is a banner of the Belgian flag, as the bishop was born in Belgium.
 
The Tau is a symbol for redemption. The hand with the globe symbolises the missionaries of the Holy Apostles, to which he belonged. The iris is taken from the flag of the Brussels Agglomeration in Belgium. It also represents the fleur-de-lys in the Québec flag. The precious stone, known as a hyacinth, is a symbol for the diocese.
