Origin/meaning

The main symbol on the shield is a stylized wheel. Bishop Gumbleton is a very active man and comes from a very active and dynamic city, Detroit. The wheel represents activity, dynamism, and the circle of unity - working together.

The colors are chosen are maroon and silver, representing the blood and water that flowed from the side of the crucified Christ. It is Christ's redeeming sacrifice that is the foundation of all true Christian activity. This is depicted in the shield by the cross drawn behind the wheel in maroon and silver.

The motto "Be doers of the word" is taken from the Letter of Saint James 1:22. The passage ends with the reminder that, if we are doers of the word, we aid the poor of the world. "Religion pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to give aid to orphans and widows in their tribulation, and to keep oneself unspotted from this world."

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
