Origin/meaning

The open book surmounted by a sword are in horror of St. Paul, to whom the Bishop has a special devotion and whose Theology he expounded at St. John's Seminary. The book alludes to the teachings and counsels of the Apostle; the sword erect and piercing the trimount of Boston, is portrayed as a "sword of spirit."

In the chief, the plate is an old heraldic charge found in the arms of the Kelleher family, and became here the symbol of the Sacred Host. The shamrocks denote his love for Ireland.
