The arms were granted on December 18, 1970.
The arms show a black type of battle-axe. This typical type of battle-axe is known asince the 15th century. Many of these axes were decorated beautifully. Especially from the Telemark region many ofthese axes are known, which is why it was chosen as the symbol for the province.
