Bishop of Augsburg, 1963-1992
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The quartered arms show in I and IV the diocesan arms. In II and III show the cross of St. Ulrich, the patron saint of the diocese, two pilgrim's staffs (as a symbol for the task of a bishop) and a wall. The wall is taken from the Bible in the first letter of Peter. The four embattlements refer to the four evangelists. The colours are taken from the colours of the seminary in Dillingen, where he studied.
The inescutcheon is taken from the arms of Maihingen, where he was born.
He never used the episcopal hat and tassels.
