Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on August 21, 1991.
In these arms the charge in chief is a tree cladogram, a symbol of the evolutionary process and thus well-known in the natural history museum context. It is shown in conjunction with a DNA spiral, the key of life.
The martial eagle chosen for the crest is displayed in the foyer of the Transvaal Museum, which is well-known for its ornithological collection.
