Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The personal half is based on that of the an Irish Byrne family and is thus used here to represent the name of the bishop. The two sea shells symbolize St. James, his baptismal patron. The silver crescent symbolises the Blessed Virgin, special patrons of the archbishop. The chevron in the form of a carpenter's square represents St. Joseph, another name patron of the archbishop.

The motto, "Ad Jesum Per Mariam"-"To Jesus through Mary", was chosen by Archbishop Byrne becausee his appointment as auxiliary bishop came in May, the month of Mary.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of (arch)bishop.
