Official blazon
Origin/meaning
As auxiliary bishop he used the black cross of the Archdiocese of Köln combined with a steering wheel. This wheel is the symbol of St. Niklaus von Flüe (Bruder Klaus), the patron saint of the parish where he worked before becoming a bishop.
In Berlin he used the arms of the diocese with in base the wheel, whereas after his return in Köln he used the same symbols as auxiliary, but now in a different combination.
