Origin/meaning

The red and silver as well as the two red flanks with a silver point are based on the Canadian flag, as the archbishop was born in Canada. His Croat roots are symbolised by the checkerboard design, based on the Croatian national arms.

The star refers to St. Mary, also known as the morning star. The scallop is a symbol for pilgrims and here seen to symbolise that all humans are pilgims to the heart. The Chi-Rho symbol is a symbol for Jesus.

The motto means 'For freedom Christ has set us free'.
