Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The arms show a golden quail on red. Red symbolizes the personal devotion of bishop McKnight to the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin May, the patron of the diocese of Jefferson City.
The quail is a symbol of Gods providential blessing and an Old Testament prefoguration of the Eucharist, as the Lord provided for His people in the desert with manna in the mourning and quails in the evening (Ex.16:11-13 and Num.11-31-32, Ps. 78:27 and Ps. 105:40).
Quail hunting is also a favourite activity of bishop McKnight, an activity which requires the use of pointing, flushing and retrieving hunting dogs, and through which he experiences the beauty, harmony and providence of God in nature.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
