Region : Pohjois-Savo
Former province : 1997-2009 Itä-Suomi (until 1997 Kuopio)
Incorporated into : 2013 Kuopio

Nilsiä Kuntavaakuna / Kommunvapen

Official blazon

Mustassa kentässä kultainen havuristi.

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on December 29, 1953.

The fir cross refers to both forestry and the name of the town which comes from a word to debark trees. The cross motive also refers to the farmer Paavo Ruotsalainen (1777-1852), known nationwide as the leader of the so-called Pietism.
