Heraldry of the World Civic heraldry of Portugal - Brasões dos municípios portugueses |
CHAVES
District : Vila Real
Origin/meaning :
The water probably denotes the old Latin name of the town, Aqua Flaviae. The name Chaves seems to be derived from Flaviae and means keys, the keys thus are a canting symbol. The small shield shows the Portuguese arms, its significance I don't know.
Arms of Freguesias in Chaves :
- Anelhe
- Calvão (Chaves)
- Faiões
- Loivos
- Madalena (Chaves)
- Santa Maria Maior (Chaves)
- Santo Estevão (Chaves)
- São Pedro de Agostém
- Vale de Anta
- Vidago
- Vila Verde da Raia
