Province: Karlovarský Kraj
District (Okres) : Karlovy Vary

Arms of Jáchymov

Official blazon

Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on July 15, 1546.

The settlement was founded in 1516 by Count Stephen Slik in the vicinity of silver ore mines. Four years later King Louis I promoted the settlement to the status of a free mining town and at the same time granted it a coat-of-arms which was changed in 1546 at the occasion of the elevation of Jáchymov to the status of a royal mining town by King Ferdinand I. This is reflected by the crowned Bohemian lion placed in two sections of the quartered shield. A structure with a conically shaped roof and housing a winch above the mouth of the pit refers to mining. In the center of the shield there are crossed mining hammers placed on the Austrian coat-of-arms.

The arms are supported by the patron saints of the town St. Jachym and St. Ann.
