Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1938.
The arms of Varde are the oldest known Danish arms and date from the early 12th century. The lion is the lion of the Dukes of Lüneburg, as Varde was a gift from King Valdemar to his sister Helene, for her marriage with Wilhelm of Lüneburg. The arms are first mentioned at the dead of Wilhelm in 1219.
