Origin/meaning
These arms have been officially granted on 20th February 1996.
The local castle (12th century) belonged to the counts of Empúries (shown on the first partition by their arms, barry Or and Gules). In 1418, the count Pere II was married with Joana de Rocabertí, and the town passed to the viscounts of Rocabertí (whose arms are shown on the second partition: Gules, three pales Or charged with chess rooks Azure); in this time the town became the centre of the barony of Verges (the arms show the baron's crown). Finally, in 1587, the town passed to the Crown and was the centre of a royal municipality; this is show by the royal arms of Catalonia-Aragon on the third partition: four pales Or on Gules.
