The arms were registered on October 21, 2004.
The arms show three grayling (Thymallus thymallus), which are canting, as a greyling is an Asch in German and the historical German name of the city was Asch.
The oldest seal of the city from the 17th century showed three crossed graylings and this was used as city arms till the 19th century.
