Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on September 3, 1964.
The waves across the centre of the shield represent the River Thames, the River Brent, The Duke of Northumberland's river and the Longford River. At the top of the shield are a pair of wings for London Heathrow Airport and the aerospace industries of the borough. The sword is for the ancient sword mill at Feltham and the modern Royal Army Ordnance Corps depot there. The lion at the base of the shield comes from the arms of Hounslow Priory.
The crest is a punning reference to Hounslow Heath.
The griffins previously supported the arms of Brentford and Chiswick. They are seen as protectors of treasure, symbolising the borough council's role in relation to the community. They are differenced by waves taken from the shield. The wings of the griffins are charged with seaxes from the arms of Middlesex County Council, as the area of Hounslow lay in that county until 1965.
