Origin/meaning

The lower half shows wavy bars of two shades of blue to represent water, and therefore to honor Our Blessed Mother in her title of St. Mary of the Lake, patroness of Mundelein Seminary where Bishop Rojas completed his theological studies, and later on, also served in the faculty for eight years. Water also represents the State and City in Mexico where Bishop Rojas was born, Aguascalientes, which means “hot springs.”

Upon this field is a silver representation of the arch at the entrance of Bishop’s home city with a Cross on the top which can be seen at the center of the sun. Also, on the blue field and under the arch is a fleur-de-lys, to honor his mother María De la Cruz, and the Blessed Virgin Mary. At the bottom, five golden stars surround the fleur-de-lys and the arch. Combined with the blue background, the stars remind us of the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Queen of Mexico, and Empress of the Americas.

The chief is gold on which is issuant from the base a red sunburst. This sun represents the Son of God, Our Lord Jesus Christ, who shines upon us from on high as we endeavor to do his will.

As his motto, Bishop Rojas selected the phrase, both in English and in Spanish, “God’s Love is all we need ~ Nos basta el Amor de Dios”, expressing that if we live in the Love of God, we remain in Christ Jesus as children of God on our journey of faith towards Eternal Life. As Auxiliary bishop in Chicago he used a slightly different motto : "El amor de Dios al todo."

The achievement is completed with the external ornaments, which are a gold processional Cross, that is placed in the back, which extends above and below the shield, and the pontifical hat, called “Gallero”, with six tassels in three rows on either side of the shield, all in green. These are the heraldic insignia of a servant of the rank of Bishop by instruction of the Holy See of March 31, 1969.
