Bishop of Geraldton |
Archbishop of Perth |
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
In Geraldton the bishop impaled his arms with the diocesan arms; in Pert he impaled his arms with elements partly taken from the archepiscopal arms.
The personal arms show oak leaf between two acorns, which is taken from the arms of an Hickey family and used here to symbolise the last name of the bishop.
The Jerusalem cross is a symbol for Jesus and the five loaves between two fish are an Eucharistic symbol.
In Perth he took the swan and Southern Cross from the arms of the Archdiocese with a fleur-de-lis as a symbol for St. Mary.
The motto Umbram Fugat Veritas (truth puts the shadows to flight) is taken from Lauda Sion, a Eucharistic hymn composed by St Thomas Aquinas for the feast of Corpus Christi.
