Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1953, but are based on a seal dating from the 18th century.
The lion is the lion of the Welfen dynasty, as this family ruled Herzberg for many centuries since 1157. The deer was the symbol used by the former Amt Herzberg territory, which was incorporated into Osterode district in 1885. The deer (Hirsch) can be considered as a canting element. The colours of the deer were derived from the arms of the Counts of Lutterberg who founded a castle in what later was to become the village of Herzberg in 1029.
