Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on February 3, 1950.
The black ground or sable represents the coal and the earth from which the gas comes, the flames coming out represent the gas, on the borders there are 12 red or guise annulments representing the 12 individual Area Gas Boards, the owls represent Minerva, the goddess of counsel, the dragon crest holding a torch represents the Council's interest in education and research.
