BÜREN AN DER AARE

Canton: Bern

Wappen von Büren an der Aare/Arms (crest) of Büren an der Aare
Official blazon
German blazon wanted
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

The origin of these arms is not quite clear. The area was conquered by Bern in 1388, and the claw may be derived from the arms of Bern. The arms have been used since the 15th century for the new district and the city of Büren took the arms from the district around 1500.

The present district still uses the same arms.

The medieval seals of Büren show a rather different composition. The oldest seal shows an ibex (of unknown meaning/origin), the three later known seals all show St. Catherine, the patron saint of the city.
