Bishop of Jefferson City, 1969-1997

Arms (crest) of Michael Francis McAuliffe
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The two stars come from the McAuliffe family arms of Munster in Ireland. The lozenge is from the Broderick coat of arms, to honor the mother of the bishop.

The two bars with a wavy star come from the arms of Saint-Francis de Sales, one of the bishops baptismal patrons. The open book commemorates his many years of work and interest in the field of education.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
