Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1941.
The arms show three anchors, for the harbour of the city, and a wavy bar for the Gavleån river.
From the 15th century onwards the seals and arms of the city only showed a letter G. When in 1940 the Swedish nave wanted to name a frigate Gävle, they needed the arms to decorate the ship. This resulted in a discussion on the arms of the city. Several proposals were made, for example with a phoenix or a fish, but finally the Swedish Heraldic Council proposed the current arms, which were granted in 1941.
