Origin/meaning

The Council has no official coat of arms but has adopted a badge of heraldic form.

The top of the shield is for Ely. It shows a bishop's mitre for Ely Cathedral and the many other ancient churches in the area. The bottom part of the shield has a mare and foal for the Newmarket Rural District. The area contains racecourses and stud farms and is the centre of the British horse racing industry.

The two parts are divided by two wavy lines for the many waterways of the area.
