Département : Loire-Atlantique
Official blazon
Origin/meaning
The arms date from the early 16th century and indicate the importance of Nantes as a harbour city. The sails of the ship and the chief show the ermine of the arms of Bretange (Brittany), as Nantes was the main port in Bretangne. Prior to the 16th century the city used seals since 1350, with different ships, but without the ermine.
