ARRAS

Département : Pas-de-Calais

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on February 22, 1817.

The arms were already adopted much earlier, in November 1696 and are those of the council of the Ville d'Arras. Arras at the time was divided into two parts, the Ville and the Cité.

The origin of the lion is not known. The escutcheon shows the arms of the County of Artois, of which the city was the capital.

The city is entitled to use the decorations of the Légion d'honneur (granted 1919) and the Croix de guerre 1939-1945.
