The blue shield and nine-pointed star refer to the morning star as an illustration of the motto chosen from the 2nd letter of the Apostle Peter 1:19. In chief is the red wheel of Osnabrück and two crossed silver keys taken from the arms of the Archdiocese of Hamburg.
