Official blazon

  • Arms: Azure a Seahorse naiant, in dexter chief a representation of the constellation of the Southern Cross of five Mullets all Argent.
  • Motto: I Look Ahead

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 1, 1965.

The Seahorse are taken from the Arms of a Lieutenant Shortland who in 1797 expored the site that was to become Newcastle. The Univeristy is also located in the suburb of Shortland. To this the Southern Cross has been added which in a sligthly different form as in the arms of New South Wales. The University of Newcastle begun as the Newcastle University College part of the NSW University of Technology (now the University of NSW).
