Arms of Sabile (town)

Official blazon

Zelta laukā purpura vīnogķekars ar divām zaļām lapām.

Origin/meaning

The arms were granted in 1925.

Sabile was founded in the 9th century on a trade road as a town of mixed Livonian and Kurši inhabitants. In the 13th century the Teutonic Order built the Zabeln castle. Some German inhabitants settled here and started viticulture. The wine growing became the traditional field of agriculture here.

In 1917 town rights were granted. The town created its arms: a bunch of grapes. The bunch of grapes in the arms refers to the fact that the one of the world's northernmost vineyards is in the municipality.
