Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on May 30, 1994.

The ships are Portuguese caravels which allude to the fact that Prince Henry the Navigator spent much time at Sagres where he supposedly met with experts in order to perfect what came about as Portugal's golden age of Navigation. The blue compass in the point of the shield is a reference to a very large compass rose which is the only object still standing at the Sagres promontory from Prince Henry's days.
