SCHWABWILLER
Département : Bas-Rhin
Incorporated into : 1972 Betschdorf
Origin/meaning
Tthe green and white bars are taken from the arms of the barons de Fleckenstein. The barons of Fleckenstein, however, have never been the Lords of Schwabwiller, but of other nearby villages.
The flames are those of the harzbrenner von Schwabweiler, or resin (bitumen) manufacture, in which pine trees were burned to get the resin. The village lies on the northern border of the big holy forest of Haguenau, where in the 19th century many people made resin from the roots of conifers.
