Origin/meaning
The arms were granted in 1901 and show the image of St. Lawrence, the local patron saint from early medieval times until the Reformation. The oldest known use of the saint dates from 1561, when the saint is shown on the local seal. In the 19th century the seal showed a kind of spear, used to catch fish (Ger in German), resembling the Greek trident. Fishing has been of great local importance for many centuries, hence the use of the trident. In 1901 the State Archives proposed to adopt arms with the historical saint with his attributes a grill and a burned branch. St. Lawrence was burned on a grill during Roman times.
