The heart transfixed by an arrow, symbol of the heart of the Saint transfixed by the shaft of Divine Love, is the accepted emblem of St. Augustine, Bishop.of Hippo, after whom the Diocese was named. The field quartered red and silver is reminiscent of the Spanish origin of the diocese, the respective fields of the arms of Castile and Leon quartered in the royal arms of Spain being of these tinctures.
