Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted in 1945.
Filipstad was founded in 1611. Whether the new town immediately received a seal or arms is not known. The oldest seal dates from 1630 and already shows the knight on horseback. The colours were not specified until the grant of 1945. The knight may be the image of Duke Karl Filip of Värmland, son of King Karl IX, after whom the town was named (and who died in 1620).
