Origin/meaning
As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the archbishop.
The Lamb symbolises Christ and the Puertorican ancestry of the Archbishop. The Staff symbolises the strength that springs from the unity between the shepherd (the Bishop) and his flock (the Congregation). The wave symbolises water and the Archbishop Marino's Home State Mississippi named for the Great River. The chevron alludes to membership in the Society of St Joseph and the Holy Heart (SSJ). St Joseph was a carpenter and the chevron symbolises a carpenter's square.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of archbishop.
As Auxiliary bishop he used rather different arms, see above.
The lamb, staff and chevron were already part of these arms and are explained above.
The symbolic arrangement of the shepherd's staff and a cord suggest the two Greek letters Chi and Rho. These letters are the first two letters or the Greek word for Christ. They are also symbols for strength and unity.
The 'water' in the second quarter is replete with symbolism. It washes, cleanses and gives life to those who would live. It also represents the Titular see of Walla Walla, Washington, which, in Indian, means "place or many waters". As described above it also represents (the) Mississippi.
The fleur-de-lys is also a symbol for St. Joseph. The basket of bread symbolises the bishop's Eucharistic mission of nourishing and sustaining the people of God with the Body of Christ.
The crosses in chief are taken from the arms of the Archdiocese of Baltimore and also symbolise the Blessed Trinity.
