Origin/meaningThe new arms were adopted in 2916 and became official on January 1st, 2017. The new arms show part of the local whale hunting monument. The whaling monument is reminiscent of the district's whaling in the period from about 1900 to 1968 and laid the foundation for significant growth, especially in the three municipalities that form the new municipality. The monument has become a landmark of the city, because it is both a spectacular sight and because it refers to a very special history from the time when Sandefjord and the surrounding villages were the center of a significant, worldwide industry.
