Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on June 12, 1958.
The arms are a combination of the arms of the Savo (later Kuopio) province (bow and arrow) and the local church. The arms were first granted in 1823. The crown above the bow and arrow indicate that the town was a local capital in the 17th century.
The arms from 1823 |
In the middle of the 19th century B. Kene designed new arms, with only the church and the provincial arms in the upper right corner. These arms were not adopted.
The proposal of Kene |
The colour of the arms was not properly determined, so in the 19th century and early 20th century different colour combinations appeared. Only in 1958 the colours were designed.
The arms in 1905 |
