Origin/meaning

The arms were granted on June 20, 1975.

The tower is the so-called Westturm on the island. The tower was built in 1597 and since the 17^th century used as a lighthouse and beacon. The waves symbolise that Wangerooge is an island, and thus is dependent on the sea. The small shield shows the lion of the Lords of Jever, as the island historically was part of the Jeverland area.
