As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese paled with the personal arms of the bishop.
The lion is symbol of courage and strength. Bishop Brandt as a bishop is committed to protect with courage and strength the flock committed to his care. The black grid iron recalls the martyrdom of Saint-Lawrence (d.258), the bishops baptismal name The gold and red fields recall the fire with which Saint-Lawrence as martyred and is also an allusion to the name ¨Brandt¨from the German name ´Brand´ = fire.
The motto IGNIS CARITATIS is translated with ¨With the fire of Love¨.
The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop by instruction of the Holy See, of March 1969, confirmed in March 2001.
