JAMES FOLEY

Born: July 19, 1948
Deceased:

Bishop of Cairns, 1992-present

Arms (crest) of James Foley
Official blazon
English blazon wanted

Origin/meaning

As common in Australian episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The dove on the mount holding in its beak an olive branch (Gen. 8/11), is taken from the arms of Pius XII in recognition of Banyo Seminary. The open book and sword recall the sentiments of the motto and Hebrews 4/12: The Word of God is something alive and active, it cuts like any double-edged sword but more finely. The blue and white are the colours of the University of Leuven (Belgium), where the bishop studied.

The achievement is completed with the heraldic insignia of a prelate of the rank of bishop.
