JOHN MARK SPALDING

Born : January 13, 1965
Deceased :

Bishop of Nashville, 2018-Present

Arms of John Mark Spalding

Official blazon

Tierced per fess, in 1st Azure, a lion of St. Mark, or, in 2nd of the last, a fleur de lis of the first, in 3rd of the first, a Jerusalem Cross of the second.

Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The upper part of the personal side shows the lion of St. Mark, representing the middle name of the bishop. The fleur-de-lys in the middle part is the symbol for St. Joseph, the first patron of the bishop. St. Joseph is also the patron saint of the Diocese of Nashville and the Archdiocese of Louisville, where the bishop grew up.

The Jerusalem Cross is taken from a British Spalding family arms and thus symbolises the family name of the bishop.
