Origin/meaning

As common in US episcopal heraldry, the arms show the arms of the diocese impaled with the personal arms of the bishop.

The field of azure in the chief of the personal half is charged with a lion atop a book. The lion is the traditional symbol of Mark the Evangelist, the patron of Archbishop Buechlein at his baptism. It also recalls the story of the prophet Daniel, the name given Archbishop Buechlein at his profession as a Benedictine monk. The family name, Buechlein, is German for 'little book', which thus is also symbolised by the book.

The lower half shows a bison reminiscent of the State of Indiana seal; the raven in the dexter base quarter calls to mind both St. Benedict and St. Meinrad, patrons from Archbishop.
