Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted on January 7, 1994.

The arms are based on the 15th or 16th century seal of the city. The oak tree is a canting symbol, for the -walde part of the name (Wald=forest). The oldest seals showed a linden tree, but in the 16th century this was replaced by an oak tree on the seals.

The small shields show the arms of the Knights of Uchtenhage, Lords of Freienwalde from the 14th century until 1618.
