Origin/meaning

Frankenberg became a city in the middle of the 13th century. The oldest seal dates from 1249 and shows a city wall with five towers. The smaller seals, also dating from the late 13th century, show however the lion of Hessen above three canting hills (Berg). During the later centuries the latter composition was used as arms, whereas the older composition with the city wall was still used on the seals.
