Origin/meaning
The arms were officially granted on March 19, 1995.
The arms show the local patron saint, St. John Baptist on the divided shield of the Diocese of Magdeburg. The city was a longtime possession of the Archbishops of Magdeburg. In 1990 the city council decided to reject the arms of 1960 (see below) and re-establish the historical arms. However, the colour design was not according to the heraldic rule of tincture and thus it took until 1995 before the old arms were restored.
The previous arms were granted on June 21, 1960.
These arms show the quartered shield based on the arms of the diocese of Magdeburg, with symbols for industry (cog-wheel, mining-wheel and chemical flask) and agriculture.
