Origin/meaning
The arms were granted on October 4, 2007.
The arms are made according to a Nenets pattern, which reflects the characteristic features of the traditional way of life of the local population. The flame in the centre of the arms reflect the oil and gas found in the area, as well as energy and light.
The green and silver symbolise the tundra and the arctic, the blue also the Pechora River, which, according to the ancient beliefs of the peoples living along its banks, connects the world of the living and their ancestors, the past and the future.
The arms replaced the previous arms adopted in 2002:
These arms show a reindeer head, reindeer herding being the main activity of the indigenous people, the Nenets. The eight-pointed star is a symbol for the sun and the polar star. The star is also a sign of constancy and denotes the energy "enclosed" in oil and gas.
The current arms were adopted after a contest in 2005.
