Origin/meaning

The arms were officially granted in 1906, and have been used since 1577.

The arms are based on the oldest seal of the city from 1267, which showed the same composition, but with two stars beside the tower. The second seal, from the 14th century shows a slightly different tower, but no stars. Later seals all showed the tower, sometimes with small side towers (that have been wrongly interpreted as hornblowers) or crosses.
